Hey :)

Have you ever been to the doctor because you feel off and no one can tell you what’s wrong?

Or maybe they could tell you what was off, but the solution didn’t feel right to you. Maybe they said, here’s a pill to take. Maybe they said you would need surgery. Maybe they said there’s nothing you can do about it and you’ll have to live with your symptoms forever.

If you’re like me, none of these felt good when presented to me personally or in regards to my children.

There HAS to be a better way.

And there was. Turns out, a lot of symptoms that have been normalized in American culture, are manageable and, dare I say, reversible with the right emphasis on diet and lifestyle.

I’m sharing my personal story here with you so if you can relate in any way, you know you’re not alone and can take comfort knowing that there are solutions outside of pharmaceuticals and surgery to try instead of or alongside traditional MD prescribed protocols.

So here you go…

I’ve always been interested in diet and lifestyle. My mom was always on a new diet, in search for the next silver bullet to help. Because of this, I was exposed to veganism, vegetarianism, Paleo, Whole 30, no oil veganism, Atkins, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, YOU NAME IT, it was once the way meals were prepared in our home. I observed all of these from my periphery diet of buttered noodles and caesar salads and didn’t think much of what I put into my body but knew it was important.

I saw how much lifestyle changes helped my mom when she was battling cancer. A renewed focus on herself, meditation and yoga inspired me and gave me permission to put myself first and seek help when needed.

Despite all of this exposure, it wasn’t really until I was 28 that I understood firsthand how powerful our decisions, mindset and diet were in how our health manifested outwardly. I suffered from panic attack one day at work. My chest tightened up, I felt like I couldn’t breath and after trying to handle it on my own for a few hours at home, I ended up in the ER thinking I was having a heart attack.

Looking back, I know I had a lot of warning signs to the stress that ultimately led to my hospitalization. I had major GI issues the year prior, and while I was lucky enough to have a doctor who didn’t see anything wrong on my lab work and recommended meditation as a solution (vs. prescription IBS pills), it still wasn’t enough for me to really uncover where my stress was coming from.

I’d love to say that the panic attack is what inspired me to be a health coach, and while it definitely is a pivotal moment in my story, it took 3 years and 1 child later for me to understand how unhappy I was and how the decisions I was making both on and off my plate were impacting my overall health.

I suffered from postpartum depression and anxiety, I had zero energy, I wasn’t excited to get moving each day. And the more I learned about these mood disorders and my GI issues prior, the more I learned about how my gut (and subsequently the food I fed my gut) impacted digestion and mental health.

I got serious about healing myself because now how I showed up in the world didn’t just impact me. It impacted my son, Dean (and it had impacted my husband, Brad, but he’s a saint and put up with my s*&t without complaining - find yourself a Brad). So I dove into the work. I went to therapy. I listened to podcasts with reputable functional MDs and nutritionists. I started seeing a functional MD. I got my health coaching certificate to be able to understand more of this myself and help others on their path to wellness.

I’m now a mom of two and while my personal health journey is still evolving and I’m still growing, I’m now focused on setting a healthy foundation for my son and daughter through food, lifestyle, parenting choices and more. I want to set a good example for them and help them make nourishing decisions both on and off their plate so they aren’t burdened with the same issues that I was. And I’m committed to helping other moms, dads, caretakers, etc. do the same for the little people they love. <3 <3
